Resin Model Scale Comparison Guide: 1/35 vs 1/72 vs 1/144

February 03, 2026 · CastForge Team

Choosing the right scale is the first decision every model builder faces — and it matters more than most people think. The wrong scale means a model that's too small to paint comfortably or too large for your display case. Here's how to choose.

What Does "Scale" Mean?

Scale is the ratio between your model and the real thing. A 1/35 tank is 35 times smaller than the actual vehicle. A 1/72 figure is 72 times smaller than a real person. Smaller ratio number = bigger model.

1/35 Scale — The Most Popular Choice

If you're building military models, 1/35 is king. A figure stands about 52mm tall — large enough to paint detailed faces and equipment, but small enough that vehicles remain manageable. This is the scale with the widest range of accessories, figures, and vehicles available.

Best for: Military dioramas, tank crews, infantry squads, detailed painting

Figure height: ~52mm (2 inches)

1/72 Scale — Compact & Versatile

1/72 gives you models roughly half the size of 1/35. Figures are about 25mm tall. This scale is popular for aircraft and for builders who want to create large battle scenes without needing an entire room. Detail is still good, but painting faces becomes challenging.

Best for: Aircraft, large dioramas, collection displays, wargaming

Figure height: ~25mm (1 inch)

1/144 Scale — Micro Armour

Tiny but charming. 1/144 models fit on your fingertip. Figures are about 12mm tall. You won't be painting facial expressions at this scale, but you can build entire armoured divisions on a single shelf. Popular for naval wargaming and fleet displays.

Best for: Fleet collections, micro dioramas, wargaming with lots of units

Figure height: ~12mm

Large Scales: 1/10, 1/12, 1/16

These are display pieces and painting showcases. A 1/10 bust is about 180mm — large enough to paint realistic skin tones, eyes, and weathering effects. If you want to push your painting skills, large scale busts are the ultimate challenge.

Best for: Painting competitions, display cabinets, portrait detail
